TURNING 65

Your Medicare Timeline Starts Here.

Turning 65 is an important milestone. Medicare has specific enrollment periods, and understanding when you need to take action can help you avoid unnecessary delays or penalties.

STEP 01

3 Months Before 65

Your Initial Enrollment Period generally begins three months before the month you turn 65. This is a good time to start learning how Medicare works and determine what steps you may need to take.

STEP 02

The Month You Turn 65

Your 65th birthday month is part of your Initial Enrollment Period. Depending on when you enroll, your Medicare coverage start date can vary, so timing is important.

STEP 03

3 Months After 65

Your Initial Enrollment Period generally continues for three months after the month you turn 65. Your situation may affect when you should enroll, especially if you or your spouse are still working.

Why does timing matter?
Medicare enrollment rules can be different depending on your situation. If you're already receiving Social Security benefits, still working, or have coverage through an employer, your enrollment path may be different.

YOUR NEXT STEP

The next step is understanding what you actually need to do before and around your 65th birthday.

BEFORE YOU TURN 65

What Do You Need to Do Before 65?

You don't need to have everything figured out at once. The first step is understanding your situation and knowing what questions to ask.

STEP 01

Understand Medicare

Learn the basics of Medicare, including Part A, Part B, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement insurance, and prescription drug coverage.

STEP 02

Look at Your Current Coverage

If you're working or covered through a spouse's employer, find out how that coverage works with Medicare and whether you need to take action when you turn 65.

STEP 03

Think About Your Healthcare

Consider the doctors you see, prescriptions you take, hospitals you prefer, and the type of healthcare you expect to need.

STEP 04

Understand Your Options

Medicare isn't one-size-fits-all. Understanding the different ways you can receive your Medicare coverage can help you make a more informed decision.

You Don't Have to Figure It Out Alone.

Every person's Medicare situation is different. Taking the time to understand your circumstances before choosing coverage can make the process much easier.

YOUR MEDICARE OPTIONS

Understanding Your Medicare Coverage Options

Once you understand the basics, the next step is learning how your Medicare coverage can be structured. Two common approaches are Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement.

OPTION 1

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage, also known as Part C, is offered by Medicare-approved private insurance companies. These plans provide your Medicare Part A and Part B coverage through the plan.

All-in-one coverage — Many Medicare Advantage plans combine Part A, Part B, and prescription drug coverage into one plan.

Additional benefits — Depending on the plan, additional benefits may be available beyond Original Medicare.

Networks & costs — Provider networks, premiums, copays, deductibles, and other out-of-pocket costs vary by plan.

OPTION 2

Original Medicare + Supplement

Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B. A Medicare Supplement insurance policy, also known as Medigap, can help pay some of the healthcare costs that Original Medicare doesn't cover.

Part A & Part B — Original Medicare provides coverage for hospital and medical services covered by Medicare.

Medicare Supplement — A Medigap policy can help with certain out-of-pocket costs such as coinsurance and deductibles, depending on the plan.

Prescription Coverage — Prescription drug coverage is generally purchased separately through a Medicare Part D plan.

There isn't one Medicare option that's right for everyone. Your doctors, prescriptions, healthcare needs, budget, and personal preferences can all play a role in determining which type of coverage may fit you best.

So, Which Option Is Right for You?

That's where your individual situation matters. A one-on-one conversation can help you understand the differences, look at your priorities, and determine what questions you should be asking before making a decision.
